Learn from Meerabai Chanu about her preparations. Excerpts from his conversation-
Question: How are the preparations for the Asian weightlifting championship? What strategy has the coach made for you? Answer: Returning after injury, India has started practice at the camp in Patiala under the supervision of Chief Coach Vijay Sir. Vijay Sir has made a strategy for me keeping the Asian Championship in mind. They have started gradually increasing my workload in training. So that I can reach full capacity before April. Right now I am lifting 70 to 75 percent more weight than my capacity. When lifting weights, the coach head gradually increases the weight bar. So that before April my capacity increases by 90-95 per cent. For fitness, I run and exercise daily from 7 am to 8 am. Then after breakfast from 10 am to 12 am, followed by weight training from 4 to 7:30 pm.
Question: What role does a diet have for a player in weightlifting? Has the coach prepared a specific diet chart? Answer: It is very important to have the right diet in weightlifting. Its player must keep his weight correct. The weight of the first player of each event is measured. Being overweight causes the player to disqualify, while being low reduces the challenge. In such a situation, Coach Sir has made a separate diet chart for me. My and two other players' food is different from the mess. Earlier I too used to eat in the mess. But now we cook a separate coach for three people in a hostel. I had to lose weight, so it was important that my food had less oil and spice. Also the food should be protein rich. I only eat fruit at breakfast. In lunch, I eat more fish and salad. I take non-veg at night.
Question: Due to injury, could not play in World Championship and Asian Games. How to recover from injury? Answer: I rehabbed under the supervision of a specialist for four months in Mumbai. But Beck's problem was not going away. The doctors were unable to find out the exact cause of the pain. At that time I became negative. The career seemed to be over. She was nervous. But during that time, the federation, coaches and parents supported. Parents used to talk to me daily and motivate me. I would talk to the coach every day. With all these, it has been possible for me to return to weightlifting.
Question: Which country's players will be challenged in the Asian Championship? Answer: The weightlifter of China and Korea will face a tough challenge in the Asian Weightlifting Championship. Three Chinese players are also in the top ranking of the qualifiers. If I do better than these, then the medal hopes in the Olympics also increase. So my whole focus is on this championship. I am practicing keeping that in mind. This time I will put my full strength to the medal.
Question: Who is expected to perform well among the male players? Answer: The country has high hopes from 17-year-old Jeremy Lalrinunga. He is a young player. He has performed better in the last few competitions. I hope his world ranking improves after the Asian Championship and he will also be able to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
Question: Disqualified in Rio. What has changed after this?
Answer: I could not win the medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Could not lift weight in clean and jerk, so was disqualified. But a lot has been learned from mistakes. That was my first Olympics. At that time the experience was also less and quite nervous. But now I am experienced. Not to repeat Rio's mistakes, so many changes have been made. My goal is to win the Olympic medal. So I am not even going home from the camp. Last visited home in September. I feel refreshed by talking to my parents everyday.
