This moment of Sachin is titled 'Carried on the Shoulders of a Nation'. Also, Argentine star footballer Leonel Messi and Formula One driver Luis Hamilton were jointly voted Sportsman of the Year. India won the World Cup by defeating Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in 2011 under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
After winning the final match against Sri Lanka by 6 wickets, the players lifted Sachin on the shoulder and put a 'lap of honor' on the field. It was Sachin's sixth World Cup. Before that he played the final in 2003, but suffered a defeat against Australia.

It was the first time in the 20-year history of the Laureus Award that a tie was won after voting between 6-time Formula One World Champion Hamilton and 6-time FIFA World Player of the Year Messi.
