Banerjee died at the age of 83 on Friday at the Medica Superspeciality Hospital in Kolkata. He was hospitalized due to pneumonia from 2 March. Many of his organs had stopped functioning. Since then he was placed on the life support system. But he breathed his last at around 12.30 pm on Friday afternoon.
Banerjee had scored 65 goals in 84 matches for India. He captained India in the 1960 Rome Olympics and scored an equalizer for India in a 1–1 draw against France. He was also a member of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic playing Indian team. The Indian team had then beaten Australia 4–1 and finished fourth.
FIFA gave Banerjee the Order of Merit in 2004
The International Football Association declared him the greatest footballer of India in the 20th century. In 2004, FIFA gave him the Order of Merit.
