Chief selector MSK Prasad said, "Karthik will get the chance only when Dhoni will be injured
Prasad says on selection of Vijay Shankar – he does good fielding, besides batting-bowling
Gavaskar expressed surprise when Pant was not selected, said – The current form of left-handed batsman is fantastic
Mumbai. BCCI Chief Selector MSK Prasad told Rishabh Pant (22) instead of Dinesh Karthik (33) as the wicket-keeper. Prasad said that we were all unanimous that if Mahi (Mahendra Singh Dhoni) is injured, then Pant or Karthik will be in the team. He said that wicketkeeping matters in important matches and that is why we chose Karthik. However, when Pant was not picked, Sunil Gavaskar was surprised and said that the current form of this left-handed batsman is fantastic.
Kartik's wicketkeeping skills work – Prasad
While declaring the 15-member team, MSK Prasad said that the performance of the IPL in the selection has not been taken into consideration. Talking about Pant, he said, "Dinesh Karthik will not be included in the playing XI directly in the World Cup. They will get an opportunity only when Dhoni will be injured. Keeping in mind the wicketkeeping skills and the ability to withstand pressure, Karthik was chosen instead of Pant.
He said – Pant has many talents. They have a lot of time now. It is only misfortune that he can not come into the team. Under pressure, we have seen Dinesh Karthik finishing the match and this is his side.
On selection of Vijay Shankar (26), who played only nine ODIs, he said, this all-rounder from Tamil Nadu will make a triple contribution to the team. He can bat. If there is a condition like rain, then he can bowl and apart from that he is a good fielder.
A lot of options for the position of number 4 – Prasad "We are looking at Vijay Shankar for number 4 batsman, now we have a lot of options for this place." After the Champions Trophy, we have Kartik, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey We gave Ambati Rayudu a chance. "
"KL Rahul has been included in the team as reserve opener, and if management is needed, then Rahul can also bat in the middle order."
Gavaskar expressed his surprise at the decision to not include Pant-Gavaskar Pant in the Top 6, but also supported Kartik, who described him as a better wicket-keeper. Gavaskar said, "Pant was not only the IPL, but also the batting before." Pant gives option to left-handed batsman in top six, which is very beneficial against bowlers. For them, fielding has to be changed frequently and bowlers have to change their line.
