Duplessis was rested in three T20 series against England. England beat South Africa 2–1 in this series. Duplessis had captained Quinton Deacock in the ODI series against England. The series was tied 1-1. Duplessis said, "They made this decision to help South Africa usher in a new era."
Under the leadership of Duplessis, the South African team lost the recent four-Test series 1-3 against England. He captained South Africa in 112 matches, combining all three formats. During this, the African team won in 69 matches. The team, led by Duplessis, did not reach the semi-finals of the World Cup. Also, the team had to face defeat in seven of the last eight Tests.
